Striking out

I passed a sign today on my way to work, which usually contains uplifting aphorisms that seem to avoid the cliche rut. It said, "Never let the fear of striking out get in your way." This one seemed plain enough, but I mused a bit further. Let me ask you a question about yesterday: "Did you strike out, or strike out?"

If you are familiar with baseball, you understand exactly what "strike out" means. If you are an explorer, an adventurer, the meaning changes. How did those two words gather such contradictory meanings?

Start what you have in mind, where your heart tells you to go. Help those in need with your God-given talents. Strive for peace. Not just the big Peace; that can leave you feeling small. Work on the small peace. Think prayerfully about it. Then leave the rest to God. He always calls 'em as he sees 'em.
