"God's Heart"--Nicholas, age 3

“Oh Lord, I want to be in that number, when the saints go marching in"

-- Katharine Purvis

Saint, Soul, Sinner, or Something else?
All Saints Day is historically a Catholic feast day celebrating those who have gone before us with great faith, great inspiration, and in whom we mostly clearly see God reflected. As a kid, I also grew up with All Souls Day, which follows All Saints Day. Suffice it to say what I learned as child was that we souls came in second, and saints, well, they were Saints. So what is it besides a day that separates us from Saints? Putting aside pride for a minute, let's look at what the Bible says (Please read the entire passage to gain the context):
1) He made Man in his own image and likeness.
2) "This day you shall be with Me in paradise."
3) "Then he breathed on them and said "If you forgive men's sins, they are forgiven them. If you hold them bound, they are held bound."

Can we make it as Saints? Those referenced above include 1) humanity 2) a thief (on the death penalty) 3) the apostles, one of whom laid one of the biggest fattest (and probably the most transparent) lie about even knowing Christ.

God tells us we can. But how much separates us! When you find comparisons between you and saintly behavior too much to bear, read about their histories. You might be surprised how "un-saintly" many of them had been. But you don't have to be a saint all at once. No one does, in fact. It comes one action at a time.
