Read the book of Job,
Job was nearly as good and upright and successful as they get. And he bore way beyond what many of us consider hard suffering--almost his entire family dead, his body covered with disease, his wealth plundered--without cursing God. And it seems sometimes like God purposely pushed him over the brink, practially on a side-bet with Satan. Sometimes events cascade on us and make us think God is giving us far beyond what we deserve. What causes Job to be "restored?" Read the wonderful story of Job again (or for the first time), perhaps even a modern translation by Stephen Mitchell or someone else, and discover what brings Job back in God's eyes. Job's story is indeed a timeless one.
